I’m often asked how much of the shooting line should be hanging out beyond the tip-top when casting Skagit Spey lines. This is variable. The more accomplished you are as a Spey caster, the longer the overhang you will be able to handle, up to a point–anywhere from 1 to 3 ft. Also, if you’re in a tight spot or need to cast short, you may even not have any shooting line outside the tip-top. The trick is to experiment until you find what works best for you.
Be interested to hear from anyone re: their techniques.
